Description: The Indian National Flag is a rectangular tricolor or 'triranga' having saffron or 'kesari', white and green colours. It has a 24 spoke wheel in the center called the 'Ashoka Chakra' which is blue in colour. The colours signify the following: saffron stands for courage and sacrifice, white for peace and truth, green for faith and chivalry. The wheel represents the wheel of the law of dharma and motion. The Indian flag was designed as a symbol of freedom. The late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru called it "a flag not only of freedom for ourselves, but a symbol of freedom to all people."

The flag is to be made of Khadi cloth of silk or cotton, a hand-spun cloth made popular by Gandhi during the Satyagraha movement. The woven khadi is obtained from two handloom units in the Dharwad and Bagalkot districts of northern Karnataka. Then the material is sent to the BIS laboratories for testing whic is then separated to be colored in saffron, white and green. The Ashoka Chakra is screen printed, stencilled or embroidered onto each side of the white cloth.

The National Flag was adopted on 22 July, 1947 during the meeting of the Constituent Assembly. The flag is designed by Pingali Venkayya based on the Swaraj Flag of the Indian National Congress. The Flag Code of India states the usage of the Flag of India.
